This American Life did a story a month back titled Ruining It for the Rest of Us. Act one is about a couple in California that didn't vaccinate their kid and he picked up measles durring a trip to Switzerland and kicked of an outbreak in the US.
It's a bit more credulous than I would have liked, but still an interesting exploration of some of the consequences of this trend.

Remember you guys, anyone who exercises, takes vitamins or eats a food (or abstains from eating a food) for any reason other than taste is practicing alternative medicine.
Hopefully none of you are participating in such quackery.

Why do you suggest that nutrition science and related bodies of knowledge, arrived at by testing are not main-stream medicine? Why, contrarywise, would anyone eat herbs and barks and such for reasons other than their (bogus) medicinal benefits?
There are two kinds of medicine: that which works, in the valid statistical tested beneficial sense, commonly known as mainstream-medicine, and that which does not.
Incidentally, I am considering, the next time I am opened up on an operating table anyway, to have my organs rearranged according to Feng Shui principles. I am hopeful it will cure my Apnea.

Stern- that would be interesting- if not beneficial in any way and I'll bet that they would all kind of 'fall' into their usual place eventually- barring scar tissue of course
anyhoo- Nutritional science and treatment is not 'alternative', neither are some herbs and 'barks' (think of aspirin) the only 'alternative medicine' is that which is not based on empirical science - such as homeocrapathy or similar. Nutrition is in fact basic to all medicine and proper effective nutrition can solve a lot of the body's problems. Exercising is natural and also of benefit and has been proven to be so by scientific method- therefore also not alternative.
what I was pointing out in the original post today was the lack of responsibility on the part of the media in perpetuating this unfounded crap about vaccines and putting kids lives at risk as a result - this has nothing whatsoever to do with so-called 'aternative medicine' but has everything to do with bad science and an irresponsible radio show presenter.

some good comments on her blog
Quote:
Dr Peter Strebel, an immunisation expert at the WHO, stressed that even in countries with good health services, measles could be very serious. "Parents and doctors need to be reminded that measles is a highly contagious disease," he said. "Even healthy and well-nourished children, if unvaccinated, are at risk of measles and its complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis and, although rare, death."
Contrast this with Jeni's opinion from the broadcast:
“if its viral, and childrens immune systems are strong whats the problem?”

If "death" was on the list more often people might take "complications" a bit more seriously....
