From this link that psychodiva provided:

You mean, this has not been a given all along? Fascinating.

Fortunately, I still have some time to mellow out before I have to worry about it (she's only 4).

social sciences and psychology teaching for the last decade or three has been taught from a standpoint of the innate 'good' in all human beings- this has been largely political but some of it social and psychological- the pendulum is now beginning to swing back to the 18th-19th century when humans were thought of as innately 'bad' - I jest only slightly in saying that

Do what I did: train your daughter to kill him instead

You know, this subject has come up (sort of) between my wife and I.

Although she is only 4, and already involved in a lot of activities, I have been toying with the idea of enrolling her in a martial arts class, just to get her interested early.

My wife is worried that she will beat up other kids, because she won't understand when to use or not use those skills. I'm arguing that this is part of learning martial arts, and I'm guessing that they are especially careful when teaching young kids.

My piece of mind would be so much better if I know that my little girl can whup the shit out of anyone who threatens her.

I'd go for it! best thing you can do for a female child is teach her to defend herself- and to not be meek and mild but to shout NO! very very very loud when she feels threatened Taught my daughter and my son this - and they both did well

If you pick the right school and discipline, she will learn to keep her skills in check. If that doesn't convince your wife, then start her in Aikido. It's a martial art form that focuses on defensive-only training.

Aikido is very good, I recommend it as well. Personally I do Kempo, currently a brown belt, although my twin brother is a second degree black belt and my younger brother is a first degree black belt. Just about any martial art will do the trick, but I highly suggest staying away from Tae-Kwon-Do, it's worthless for self defense.

Mind you- when she gets older the best thing is straight- no martial-arts - self defence classes for women- they teach more than martial arts- they teach a non-victim stance and a way of behaving towards potential attackers that will scare the bejeesus out of the bastards if they just look at her askance

katers, are you bringing your rifle?

One of the most irrational of all the conventions of modern society is the one to the effect that religious opinions should be respected....That they should have this immunity is an outrage. There is nothing in religious ideas, as a class, to lift them above other ideas. On the contrary, they are always dubious and often quite silly.
