Our Daily Bread
Reading about the Aga Khan rekindled a memory of a few years ago. There used to be several local franchises of Bun King Bakery. I stopped patronizing one of them because the girl working there consistently tried to shortchange me. There was another franchise in the south end of town, staffed by a woman in Muslim garb, and featurng a framed photo of the Aga Khan prominently on the wall in the checkout area. Knowing the high ideals of the religious, it gave one confidence in shopping there.
One day, just as I entered, I observed this woman stooping down to pick up a bun from the floor. It had obviously been stepped on and flattened. I assumed it was destined for the garbage bin, but no, failing to notice me, she put it back in the bin it had originated from! I couldn't believe my eyes. I comlained to the local health department, and never patronized that bakery franchise again. Eventually, it disappeared, replaced by another business.
