I think the way it works is that certain genes can make you prone to alcoholism, but not guarantee it. Likewise, you can become alcoholic even without those genes. So it is a sickness, and at the same time it is not.

As far as I know, alcoholism is treated legally as a sickness, which means if you have to miss work to attend treatment you can't be fired for it.
