Blasphemy law returns with a vengeance.

The National Secular Society said this week that blasphemy law had been reintroduced by the back door after a Manchester man was convicted at Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday of causing “religiously aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress”.

Harry Taylor left anti-religious cartoons and other material he had cut from newspapers and magazines in the prayer room of John Lennon airport in Liverpool. He did this as an act of provocation because he says he regards himself as a militant atheist. He is now on bail awaiting sentencing – religiously aggravated offences carry a potential seven-year prison term.

For fuck's sake - if the 'authorities' ever check over this place, there'll need to be a huge international prison expansion programme!

A defense against a charge of blasphemy would require the plaintiffs to show that the god allegedly harmed was the true god, both rigorously excluding all other gods and presenting the reality of the one chosen.

If memory serves me right there are some states who still have written blasphemy laws on record, however as far as I understand nobody can be convicted of blasphemy as it constitutes an unconstitutional restraint on the freedom of speech.

Norway still has blasphemy laws that are, in theory, active. Nobody has been convicted using these laws for a very long time, however. I don’t think anyone takes them serious anymore and there was talk not too long ago of removing them altogether.

The Italian satirist Leo Bassi has been the subject of a complaint filed in the courts of the Spanish city of Valladolid by the State Association of Christian Lawyers accusing him blasphemy. Mr Bassi allegedly mocked the pope, the Catholic religion and Christian symbols during his act.

Mr Bassi was performing in the Auditorium of the University of Valladolid at a conference organised by the Republican Atheist group. The conference was entitled “Judeo-Christian roots of the West: an historical fraud to fight.”

“We think Leo Bassi may have committed a crime punishable under the Penal Code (section 525.1) as the offense and derision toward the beliefs of a religious denomination,” said William Garabito Efe, who made the complaint on behalf of the Association of Youth for Factual Information (Ajio). As well as Bassi, the complaint names Republican Ateneo, and the rector of the University of Valladolid, Mark Sexton.

The complainants say that Mr Bassi was dressed as Father Christmas as he “mocked the most prominent symbols and beliefs of the Christian faith” which they considered “slander and libel” that amounted discrimination on religious grounds that could incite hatred and violence.
