Fundamental of Biochemistry by Voet, Voet, & Pratt is a nice biochemistry text.
There are lots of competing Biochemistry texts! :D

I can recommend this one too!

Lots of good books being recommended here! For those who are interested in the nitty gritty of experiments (i.e. how to make the solutions, the gels, etc.) I highly recommend Maniattis. It's like the Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook for Molecular biology.

"Biochemistry" by Grisham and Garrett is the book I used for my biochem class. It was pretty good, but quite expensive ($150 new at the school bookstore). I think I bought it on half.com for $70.

Voet & Voet = pretty good. Although, I ended up with a copy that was missing some pages and had duplicated pages (brand new!). I also have "Biochemical Pathways: An atlas..." by Michal. Great reference if your working on Physiology.

Actually, I am looking for good books along those lines. Do you have the title on you? I looked up Maniattis on Amazon.com and got some Kerouac book. :P

Let's see....... "Molecular Cloning: A laboratory Manual" By T. Maniatis. Widely known as simply, "Maniatis". Every genetics lab I've ever seen has had this three volume comb-bound set published around 1987. It's hard to find, but the most important book I've ever come across. Let me see if I can find it for you (this may take a few days). Perhaps a paperback version of "Short Protocols in Molecular Biology" would be more accessible. Is there a particular technique for which you are looking?

HAH! Found it right away! Cold Spring Harbor still publishes it, but it's gonna run you $250. Well worth it in my opinion. I'm going to spring for my own copy in the next year or so.

No technique in particular. I'm just trying to build a library of good reference works. I suppose books dealing with protein purification and cell & tissue culture would be the most useful to me at this point, though I honestly haven't had to do either one.....yet.

Wow, pricey! I think I'll rely on my university's library if I ever need it, but I'll keep it in mind. Thanks!

You know who you are!
Molecular Genetics of Bacteria by Snyder and Champness. Used on Amazon for about 70 bucks.

I do a fair amount of prot. purification. Mostly by SDS-PAGE and electroelution. I've got a rockin' protocol for complete cloning, overexpression, and purification of OM proteins in gram negative bacteria. I raised tons of antibodies using it.

also, you never know when you'll get a shit prof resulting in your GPA getting fucked and being short $400 (that's what one class costs here at the UofL)
:offtopic: hey, what does university cost in the US generally?

Mine runs about $750 for the class and about $150 for the book, so about $900 / class on average.

2 ) Introduction to Genetic Analysis by Griffiths et al (a new copy is >$100, but they have used ones that are more reasonable). Genetics and genetics only. If you want only genetics, this is the book to get.

What, this doesn't count?

EMR, seriously, if you want the finest publications in the field of genetics why would you go anywhere other than the Culinary and Hospitality Industry Publications Services ???
Are you crazy!
