Here is a quote from David Hume as recorded by James Boswell 3 March, 1777.
"He said that the morality of every religion was bad, and, I really thought, was not jocular when he said that when he heard a man was religious, he concluded he was a rascal, though he had known some instances on very good men being religious."
The occasion of the meeting was that Hume was dying and James Boswell was reluctant to believe in the reports he had heard about Hume's stoicism. He left admiring, and amazed, and no longer in doubt. David Hume's views had a marked effect on many of those who signed the American Declaration of Independence.
