Yes but don't forget the Crap of religious beliefs was not invented yesterday. We are what we eat. A series of accidents & the ingestion of psychotropic substance is IMHO what develop cognition, the belief in gods, over 6m years ago.
Don't forget spirituality can be recreated in the brain, but the acceptance of the illusion as reality is what I'm talking about. Can you educate a schizotypal?..schizophrenia sufferer?..and I'm not referring to an obvious schizophrenic under medication simply regular people that suffer from the malady ( don't forget we are crazy apes) & nobody seems to be aware of it. Many psychiatrist have been unable to tell the TRUE crazy person when tested. In an experiment done few yrs back ( too bad I did not video it) various psychiatrists were tested by placing one schizotypal among few "sane" folks. In the majority of the case Psychiatrists could not see the abnormal person.

Outside of the human head, all religion is just information. We atheists recognize that it is false or null information and believers do not. Of the believers, some have malfunctioning minds and are like schizophrenics, as you say. The vast majority of believers have normal brains just as the proportion of the general society. Believers with normal healthy brains are simply working the best that they can given that they can only access (self-reinforcing) false or null information.
It is a little like a youngster memorizing a multiplication table that has a typographical error and has "12 x 17 = 240". For the rest of his life the person believes "12 x 17 = 240" and, since that particular product probably doesn't arise in a way that the wrongness of the result will be detected, he will have no reason to question or recheck it.
This person certain about a delusion that is quite false but he does not have a malfunctioning brain.
No neurological examination will reveal that his cherished faith in "12 x 17 = 240" is a miswiring of his neurons. Further, no neurologist can surgically correct his certainty that "12 x 17 = 240". He can be turned around to the truth by making him admit that "17 x 12 = 204" and then showing him the whys and wherefores of his delusion.

Cal, I know I'm going to regret injecting myself into this discussion, but what the hell.
You keep reminding us that we're all "crazy," mutated apes. If that is the case, why bother distinguishing between the sane and the insane among us? Aren't we all insane, based on that particular definition of humanity?

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — The clerical abuse scandal represents the greatest threat to the Roman Catholic Church and the crisis was "born from sins within the church" not outside, Pope Benedict XVI said Tuesday on a trip to Portugal.
He called for profound purification and penance within the church as well as pardon and justice.
In some of his strongest comments to date, Benedict said the Catholic church had always suffered from internal problems but that "today we see it in a truly terrifying way."
"The greatest persecution of the church doesn't come from enemies on the outside but is born from the sin within the church," the pontiff said. "The church needs to profoundly relearn penitence, accept purification, learn forgiveness but also justice."

Looks like the poop is finally admitting the church's wrong-doings. Well, it's a start at least.

It is forgiving each other of all those internal sins that enables those sins to grow and spread. The Church needs to learn a little more about behaving like civilized adult human beings (who actually care about the well-being of children). Though, if it did, it would realize the necessity of disbanding as a religion and going into the secular charity business instead.
I note that the fall of Catholicism would also entail the extinction of its offspring, the Protestant cults since they would no longer have a basis to rebel against. They therefore have much reason to support the Pope as they never did before.

Why is the Vicar of Christ so upset about a police investigation?
Quote:
Pope Benedict has joined mounting Vatican criticism of raids by Belgian police investigating alleged child sex abuse, calling them "deplorable".
In a message to Belgian bishops, the pope expressed his solidarity "in this moment of sadness".

The poop Pope asking for justice is a lot like him asking for Ratzinger poison. I question his sincerity.

Actually, the Protestants have no fear of the "Catholic Church" falling, because it is scheduled to be taken over by the "Anti-Christ", and all that end of the world scenario stuff. Personally I think Satan has been in charge of it since day one, but that is just my factless opinion, on a belief system without evidence of its supernatural claims...
That is what forgiveness sounds like... Screaming and then silence.

At least they aren't relying on rhetorical excess.
Quote:
On Saturday Vatican officials compared the raids and investigation into allegations of child sex abuse with the treatment of the Church under communist rule. Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican Secretary of State, described the detention of priests "serious and unbelievable".
"There are no precedents, not even under the old communist regimes," he said.
|
By that I mean they didn't compare the raids to Hitler's Gestopo.
For some reason das papist goes easy on der Fuhrer.

Just who is the miscreant priest an employee of, if not the Church?
Quote:
"The Holy See does not pay the salary of the priest, or important benefits, or exercise day-to-day control over the priest, and any of the other factors indicating the presence of an employment relationship," Lena said.

If the Church had left it at that, a case might be made that it was not involved in and responsible for the priest's actions. However, the Church, ever incapable of keeping its reeking hands out of the affairs of people, explicitly provided anonymity and cover and convenient transfers. That practice, which has been going so long as to now be a standard Church policy, actively encourages any heinous acts a priest might imagine.
Even if the Vatican was not legally the employer of the priests, it is an accessory before the fact to their crimes, which is a more severe breach, and the church, now legally a person, should be prosecuted and punished accordingly.
If a priest is found to have abused children, he should not only be tried and jailed, but also the church he supposedly served should be closed down just as a whore house is closed when the madam is pinched or a restaurant is shut down if the chef is caught crapping in the souffle.
That would encourage individual churches to keep their own houses of worship clean.
Sample:
Quote:
To: Bishop of Glen Haven Shed Diocese
Dear Bish,
We, the congregation of St. Sheldon's Church and Casino, find the new Priest you sent, Fr. R. J. Rapie, unacceptable as our spiritual leader.
His behavior during this time of probation has been reprehensible. No child, male or female is safe from his gnarled and filthy hands (and worse).
Not only should he be removed from this church, he should be defrocked and chased, frockless, out of town.
Yours in the Loving Christ
Your faithful parishioners.

Every day the Church is in court is a good day. They regard that as worse punishment than hide-the-soap anyway, because when you kick a eunuch in the coffers it feels as if you've punched him in the yarbles.
I know Catholics who still go to mass but don't give money anymore, because they are loathe to support the defense of kid-touchers. (The dispersal of funds doesn't exactly work that way, but never mind)
