One of the most irrational of all the conventions of modern society is the one to the effect that religious opinions should be respected....That they should have this immunity is an outrage. There is nothing in religious ideas, as a class, to lift them above other ideas. On the contrary, they are always dubious and often quite silly.

Well keep looking for the Ebu Gogo--

and it might be interesting for some of you to revisit the Homo Floriensis discovery.

Wikipedia does a fairly good job of overviewing that. Seems they were definiately alive during the human inhabitation of that part of the world--and if the folklore is any indication may have persisted for quite a while after that.

What the hell?

I wonder.... if Neanderthals were still alive today, or we found some alive and hiding somewhere... would christians say that they had souls?
What about PYGMIES + DWARVES.

Sorry. Pharyngula inside joke.
No seriously, what if there was another intelligent race somewhere that could use reason and tools and even communicate intelligently with us. They're not "human" though, so what would christians think about that? Souls or not?
That's easily answered, and has been demonstrated with every human variant the 'soul' carrying Christians that discovered them did:

They would be considered heathen savages to be enslaved and used for farm labor. Of course, most Christians now live in more advanced societies that would not allow humans to be treated in that way. But only 150 years ago... buying and selling 'savages' was routine.

What if the other race turned out to be more advanced and started enslaving us?

Whoa, dude, pass the bong..... :o

Why would you be surprised at all that science is able to change?
:lol::lol:
Because he's a religiot, of course! He doesn't understand the concept of "integrating new information."

Look at it this way: Susie from your church seems like a nice, Christian young lady. She attends church every Sunday, participates in bible study, dresses modestly, etc. From such evidence, you may believe that Susie is a chaste young woman, possibly even a virgin (since, say, she's never been married).

Now, one day, you walk into the church office to find Susie on all fours, your pastor fucking her balls-deep from behind, with the youth director's cock in her mouth. And she is definitely enjoying it.

Given this new information, what do you do? Either a) your opinion of Susie changes, or b) you're an imbecile.

That's kind of the way science works.
Wow what an excellent analogy.

I'd go to church if Susie was gonna be there.
