Weekly Photo #11: Neogothica December 30, 2006

Neogothica
This week’s photo, titled “Neogothica”, is of Philips Memorial Hall, a wonderful piece of architecture on the campus of West Chester University, outside of Philadelphia. I was a lit major there once upon a time. A handful of the buildings on campus, built in neo-gothic style, always made walking to class more enjoyable for me. They don’t build them like that anymore.

In Over My Head December 21, 2006

As things go, I opened up a thread in the forums in response to another thread…. anyway, my post on the nature of art formed part of the basis, and the discussion is much more vibrant there than here.

Inarticulacy December 21, 2006

A certain poster in the forums who was the first to be awarded a certain prize has left a long series of one-off posts about the importance of abiding by certain norms whilst attempting to communicate. This is something of a long-term trend, it seems, in the forums: theists will, from time to time, mention the… shall we say, flavoring of many posts. The resident atheists will often respond with more… flavoring.

So, then, what’s going on? Is it really important to use or avoid using profanity? Is it possible that inserting certain ‘colorful metaphors’ into one’s speech can damage one’s ability to achieve the goals of that speech?

Sorry for another rather uninteresting title of this one, “Color”. But, as the weather turns gloomy here (highs only in the teens (celcius) and rain), I figured another shot of color couldn’t hurt.I took this one at the same time as “PG“, and it, too is a photo of those damn purple flowers whose name I don’t know.

Mozart Open Access December 15, 2006

Via Knowledge Problem, the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe is putting up
Mozart’s sheet music online. When I went to the site, it seemed that they’ve got too much traffic to handle, but hopefully it’ll all be up and running soon.

“…” December 15, 2006

Via Pharyngula, I read this post on Stanger Fruit. Here’s the money shot:

“Oakes has constructed a quote from two statements seven chapters apart, possibly the longest ellipsis known to scholarship.” (emphasis in the original -oc)

Consistency December 13, 2006

This is a continuation of the previous post, on stupid atheists.

People are woefully inconsistent. Especially when it comes to subjective things such as taste, preference, beliefs, and morals. Gather up a group of skeptical rationalists, and you’ll find all kinds of different preferences. Food, movies, and music, for example. Or sexual preference, or politcal party. Now then, here’s the question: if rational, skeptical, materialistic thought coupled with a penchant for abstraction and problem-solving doesn’t lead to agreement on foods, music, or politics, why would we think that it would lead to agreement on philisophical issues such as theism?

Will the Stupid Atheists Please Stand Up December 13, 2006

Posted by ocmpoma in : atheism , add a comment

Recently the question was brought up on the forums that perhaps atheists are, by default, not stupid. I think it’s fairly on-point — atheists often deride theists as being, shall we say, less than optimally intelligent. I think it’s fairly simple to answer the question, too: Not applicable.

The reasons for this are, of course, not so simple.
