Weekly Photo #14: Zalijinsky January 14, 2007

Zalijinskiy
This week’s photo, titled “Zalijinsky”, is an interesting one — perhaps not because of the photo itself, but rather because I took it while leaning out of one of several balconies of my apartment in Almaty, about five floors above the street. Now, when I say “my apartment”, it’s a little misleading. I was staying in the place while working in the US Embassy in Almaty (I believe it has since moved to Astana). I was there for six weeks or so back in the summer of ‘04. And the apartment was one of the best parts of the stay — which is an easy statement to make, considering it was a palatial (I estimated the square footage at somewhere in the neighborhood of 2000) two floors, three bedrooms (including a whirlpool tub), and had views like this. That’s the Tian Shan mountains; one can give directions in town as going either ‘uphill’ or ‘downhill’.

So, what’s with the title? To be honest, I’m not quite certain — it’s been a while, but I think that I heard and / or read that Zalijinsky Alatau was the name of that particular range… Unfortunately, all I have now is the picture and its title.
