About

I’m a SSgt in the Marines currently serving as a Russian Military Language Instructor at the Defense Language Institute. I’m a Russian cryptologic linguist with experience as an interpreter for START inspections at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, a BA in Russian Studies from George Mason Univeristy, and am on a leave of absence from working on an MA in International Policy / Non-proliferation at the Montery Institute of International Studies.
I’ve said it over on the ‘legal’ page, but I’ll reiterate that the posts on this blog reflect my own opinions and in no way represent the positions of any institution, be it military or civilian.
Also, I’d like to give my thanks to Chris for keeping this site running.

A MIIS student, by any chance?
I took the liberty of both putting you in instead of ‘anon’ and of deleting the post informing me that ‘anon’ was you, Phil.
As for your question, I can neither confirm nor deny my attendance at this ‘MIIS’ you refer to.
3. I can’t confirm or deny alumnus status. Well, I can do both, but I won’t.
I will say that I once lived on Lobos Street, a stone’s throw from the Presidio …
Thank you for that post on the forum ocmpoma. It was inspired.
OC, I’ve been reading a new journal that might interest you called Lapham’s Quarterly. (As in Lewis Lapham of Harper’s Mag fame) Actually the inaugural (winter, 2007) issue might interest you. Their thing is to take a single theme and explore it via great writings across millennia. The first issue is on war. (Upcoming issues to include Money and God)
Anyway I’m digging it. It’s not a journal so much as an anthology. No ads; all text and images, over 200 pgs worth.
See http://www.laphamsquarterly.org/issue_toc.php for TOC and some accessible links.
all best

Wow, what a great concept. Too bad there’s no commenting.
Phil — if it was, say, $40 a year for a subscription (what, no student discount?) I’d be all over it.
Well, it’s $60 … That’s not too bad. $15/issue. Maybe the MIIS library will pick it up with a little prodding …
By the way, my travels will bring me to Monterey within the next month or so. If you’d like to get a beer or a sourdough filled with clam chowder, drop me a line.
Line dropped. Yeah, $60 isn’t too bad, but right now I’m eyeballing a game theory journal for $70. Decisions, decisions…
